Who Is A Physician?

Physicians are an essential part of our society and their influence extends to touch all of our lives. They have some of the most demanding education and training requirements of any occupation, and we put our lives in their hands every day, looking to physicians to figure out what is wrong with us and help make it right again.

Common Complaints Against Physicians:

  • Failure to respond to changes in condition in a timely manner
  • Failure to communicate changes with long-term care facility
  • Failure to adequately treat pain

Physicians generally have one or more specialty area, such as anesthesiology, general medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery and psychology, among others.

About 1/6 of all physicians were self-employed in 2002. However, in addition to private practices, physicians can also work in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, clinics or as part of a physician group or other health care organizations.
