Signs of negligence in long-term care facilities

On Behalf of | Oct 11, 2019 | Long-term Care Facility Neglect |

Residents of nursing homes expect that they will receive proper care. There are times when this doesn’t happen, so the loved ones of anyone who lives in a long-term care facility should watch for signs that neglect is occurring.

Many things will signal this, so you must remain vigilant when you visit. From the time you walk into the door until you leave, you might notice little things that show something is amiss.

Cleanliness of the facility is one primary clue about what’s going on. It is reasonable to assume that if the facility is tidy, clean and in good repair that the residents are cared for. If you show up and there is trash where it shouldn’t be or things just don’t seem like they are being taken care of, you might need to take a look at what’s going on with your loved one.

Personal hygiene is another way you can determine if there is neglect. Residents who are being cared for properly will be neat and have appropriate clothing on. Many residents might have difficulties with self-care, including bathing, brushing their teeth or toileting. They count on staff members to lend a hand, but some employees might not willingly assist them.

Unexplained injuries, malnutrition, dehydration and unaddressed mobility issues can also signal negligence. Essentially, a nursing home that does anything less than what is required by the contract and the applicable laws might be considered negligent.

The impacts of negligence are sometimes too great to ignore. Victims of this atrocious behavior should consider seeking compensation. This can help the person recover the financial damages they suffered because of the issue.
